The people (and cats) behind the counter

Our staff is knowledgeable, friendly and reads like crazy. Ask us anything — that's genuinely the best part of the job.

Cinnamon Dokken

Owner

Cinnamon opened the shop in 1991 as a college senior with 2,000 books and a hot pot for making customers tea. She has been sole proprietor since 1994, has over three decades of experience buying books, and is drawn to the quirky, atypical, significant and beautiful.

Manager — with the shop since 1994

A book lover since birth, Kat joined in 1994 and became the store's in-shop manager. If you've ever asked for something obscure at the counter and walked out holding it, there's a good chance Kat is the reason.

Note for the client — confirm before publishingThe live site's “Our Staff: Human & Feline” page is currently empty — no individual first-person bios, favorite books, or portraits of Isaac, Delaina and Izzy could be pulled from it. Send us the real bios (and photos) in everyone's own voice, including Charlie and Cricket's, and we'll drop them straight in. The text shown here is assembled only from verified facts published elsewhere on your site.

Feline

Charlie & Cricket

They tend to sleep in the front windows and love being pet by customers. Downstairs near the Art section you'll also find Fritz, our gargoyle, who changes outfits often — pat him for good luck.

Charlie

Feline Staff

Charlie sleeps in the front windows, accepts petting from customers as a matter of policy, and has been photographed with more books than most of us have read. He appears regularly in the Books, Cats, Life is Good calendar and signs the handwritten notes that go into our Kids' Book Bag Care Packages.

Cricket

Feline Staff

Cricket shares window duty with Charlie and continues a tradition that began in 1992 with a feral grey tabby a customer carried in off the street. Five cats have run this shop over the years. Princes, every one.
